A Select Bibliography of Recent Chinese and Japanese Publications on Syriac Christianity: 2019/2020-2022
This bibliography follows on from previous bibliographies published in Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies 23.2 (2020): 355–415 (with Chen Cheng) and Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies 24.2 (2021): 537-540. It includes recent Japanese publications which did not feature in the previous bibliography and texts published between January 2021 and the end of 2022. Chinese language publications were not included in the 2019-2020 bibliography published in Hugoye 24.2, and therefore this bibliography includes major Chinese language pieces published between 2019-2022.
As with the publication in Hugoye 23.2, this bibliography is divided into two parts: a bibliography of Chinese language publications and a bibliography of Japanese language publications. The compilers searched for key terms relating to Syriac Christianity in major databases including the Airiti Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator (CiNii), and WorldCat, cross-checking with physical copies where necessary. Although Zorkina identified over 150 Chinese language publications, only the most significant publications were selected for inclusion. Nevertheless, due to the comparatively low number of Japanese language texts published during the period, all relevant Japanese language publications were included. The English translations are mostly the work of the compilers, however, where available the translations provided by the authors have been used (regardless of accuracy). Transliterations are given in Hànyǔ pīnyīn (for Chinese) and Modernized Hepburn (for Japanese), with the use of Chinese characters (simplified or traditional hànzì, or kanji) reflecting the language of each work.
